NEW LIGHT FOR MANTOVA

Urban regeneration of the monumental complex of Giulio Romano’s “Pescherie” in Mantua. Photos by Gaia Cambiaggi

Less than one year ago the complex was abandoned and inserted in the municipal sales plan for an amount of 400.000€.
The urban regeneration department of the new Council Town decided to remove the building from the sales plan and to give it back to the citizens. Because of the restricted amount of economical resources, the restoration and re-opening of the building was done by enhancing it through a new lighting system and revealing its original beauty.

The project was promoted by the Urban Regeneration department and designed by Giovanna Bellini.

The new artistic lights of the Campanile and Giardini di San Domenico, the Lungorio IV Novembre and Beccherie, are part of the wider Municipal Administration project of urban regeneration of places which constitute the identity and attractiveness of Mantova. This is the first permanent intervention located in a portion of the historical center, which opens a number of redevelopment projects for the city under the sign of Mantua as Italian Capital of Culture 2016.

The project idea stems from the desire to give to the urban context visual enjoyment of a unique place for its historical importance and its privileged relationship with the river. The starting point is the Loggia of Beccherie, to bring out the architectural volumes without interfering with the course of the water. At the top, the focus is instead the view from Piazza dei Martiri di Belfiore: the Tower that stands out over the entire area and pedestrian thoroughfares of Giardini di San Domenico Giardini, not just only to ensure greater security.
The aim is to rediscover the beauty of Mantua and recover Sottoportico and Beccherie.
